Grades: Approximately 70% of the student's grade will come from assessments, 20% will come from class assignments, and 10% will come from Ticket-Outs (GVC Mastery).
Assessment Retakes: If the student receives less than a 70% on any assessment, the student will be called in for intervention to retake the assessment. If a student receives a score between 70% and 78%, the student may retake the assessment on their own time if they wish. The maximum score allowed on all assessment retakes will be 79%.
Class Assignments (Homework): A variety of assignments will be given during class to account for 20% of their grade. Little homework will be given, however, any unfinished classwork ALWAYS becomes homework and is expected to be completed by the next class. Projects may be assigned during the year that will require work at home. More details will be provided later for projects.
Ticket-Out Retakes: Ticket-Outs are pass/fail and will account for 10% of the student's grade. If a student does not demonstrate proficiency, they will be called in for intervention until they are able to demonstrate their proficiency on the Ticket-Out.
Late work: If class assignments or homework are not turned in, a 'zero' will be entered in PowerSchool. This will remain until the work is completed and the assignment is turned in. Late work will be allowed until the week BEFORE the end of each quarter with a few exceptions. Partial credit may be assigned at the teacher's discretion. A week's notice will always be given before the cut-off date for late work.
Extra Credit: A five point Extra Credit assignment will be offered at the end of each quarter ONLY if all other assignments are in (no zeros) and all assessments are made up to the maximum score of 79%.
LAB SAFETY AGREEMENT AND CONTRACT
To ensure safety in the science laboratory at SCMS, a list of Safe Lab Practices and Procedures is provided. Working in the laboratory is a privilege that can be lost if ANY of the items below are not followed. Please read through the Safe Laboratory Practices and Procedures outlined below. In order for a student to be allowed laboratory privileges, each student (and their parent) must return the signed strip of paper below, that shows that they’ve read the items and are willing to abide by them. They also understand that if ANY one of these practices or procedures are NOT followed (even if it’s a first time offense), their student will lose laboratory privilege for the 2016/2017 school year.
Safe Laboratory Practices and Procedures
1. Follow ALL written and verbal instructions carefully and with caution. Ask for help.
2. Always work with a partner in the presence of a science teacher.
3. Stay with your lab partner or group and mind your own laboratory materials. No wandering through the laboratory to see what others are doing.
4. Use only approved equipment, chemicals, or other materials with permission and only when instructed to do so.
5. Keep food, drinks, and gum out of the laboratory. Do not taste, smell, or ingest anything in the laboratory.
6. Keep hands away from face (eyes, nose, mouth) while working in the laboratory.
7. Behave responsibly. No horseplay, practical jokes, pranks, loud noises, etc.
8. Know the location and operation of safety equipment (i.e., eye wash, fire extinguisher, spill kit, broken glass kit)
9. Notify the teacher IMMEDIATELY of any unsafe lab conditions, accidents, spills, or ANY injury, no matter how minor it may seem.
10. SAFETY GOGGLES must be worn in the laboratory any time glassware, heat, or chemicals are used as part of the lab. Please wear comfortable, closed toed shoes in the laboratory.
